Buying guide

Do you need a self-emptying dock?

A self-emptying dock sucks the robot's bin into a sealed bag, so you only deal with dust every few weeks or months. It is the single biggest convenience upgrade, especially with pets. Replacement bags are an ongoing cost.

Mopping: pad, spinning mops or roller

Basic robots drag a damp pad. Better ones use two spinning mops that lift over carpet. The newest roller mops scrub with a roller that is rinsed with clean water as it cleans. All-in-one docks wash and dry the mops for you.

Carpets, rugs and Canadian winters

Salt, sand and grit get tracked in all winter. Higher suction helps on carpets and rugs, and a mop that lifts 10 mm or more (or detaches) keeps rugs dry.

Navigation

LiDAR robots map your home, clean in straight rows and let you set no-go zones. Models with AI or 3D obstacle recognition also avoid cables, socks and pet mess. Budget robots without mapping clean in patterns and miss more spots.

Wi-Fi

Almost every robot here connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Most routers broadcast it, but check if yours is set to 5 GHz only.

How we rank and score

Ranking follows popularity: products are listed in their Amazon.ca Best Sellers order for Robotic Vacuums (checked October 30, 2026). Only products in stock on Amazon.ca at that time are included.

The score out of 10 is based on published specifications, not a hands-on test. Five criteria are worth up to 2 points each:

  • Suction: under 5,000 Pa or not stated = 0.5, 5,000–9,999 Pa = 1, 10,000–19,999 Pa = 1.5, 20,000 Pa or more = 2
  • Navigation: sensors only, no map = 0.5, LiDAR mapping = 1, mapping plus AI or 3D obstacle recognition = 2
  • Dock: charging only = 0.5, self-emptying = 1, all-in-one (empties, washes and dries mops) = 2
  • Mopping: none = 0, basic pad = 0.5, lifting spinning mops = 1.5, extending or self-cleaning roller mop = 2
  • Runtime: under 120 min = 0.5, 120–179 min = 1, 180–239 min = 1.5, 240 min or more = 2

Frequently asked questions

Are robot vacuums good on carpet?

On low and medium-pile carpet, yes, especially models with 10,000 Pa or more suction and automatic carpet boost. Thick shag rugs can still stop smaller robots.

Can a robot vacuum handle pet hair?

Yes. Look for anti-tangle or rubber brushes so hair doesn't wrap around the roller, and a self-emptying dock so you don't empty a small bin every day.

Do robot vacuums need a subscription?

No. The models in this guide work with the free manufacturer app. Ongoing costs are dust bags, filters, brushes and mop pads.

Is a robot vacuum and mop combo worth it?

If you have a lot of hard floors, yes, but basic pad mops only freshen floors. For real scrubbing, choose spinning or roller mops with a dock that washes them.
