Buying guide
How many channels do you need?
A front-only camera covers most collisions. Front-and-rear kits also record rear-end crashes, which are common in stop-and-go traffic. Three- and four-channel systems add an interior or side view, useful for rideshare drivers or for recording sideswipes in parking lots.
Resolution
1080p is enough to show what happened, but licence plates are much easier to read at 2K (1440p) or 4K, especially at night or at a distance.
Night video
Canadian winters mean long dark commutes. Look for a large aperture (F1.8 or lower), HDR/WDR and a Sony STARVIS or STARVIS 2 sensor for cleaner low-light footage.
Supercapacitor or battery?
Dash cams sit in a parked car through -30 °C nights and hot summer days. Supercapacitor models handle these extremes far better than cameras with a small lithium battery, which can swell or stop working in the cold.
Parking mode
Parking mode records bumps and motion while the car is off. Most cameras need a hardwire kit connected to your fuse box (often sold separately) and a low-voltage cut-off to protect your car battery.
Memory card
Use a high-endurance microSD card made for constant recording. Regular cards wear out quickly from loop recording and can fail without warning.
Mounting
Mount the camera behind the rear-view mirror so it does not block your view. Provinces restrict objects on the windshield, so keep it out of the driver's sightline.
How we rank and score
Ranking follows popularity: products are listed in their Amazon.ca Best Sellers order for Dash Cams (checked October 30, 2026). Only products in stock on Amazon.ca at that time are included. Accessories, duplicate listings and bundles are left out.
The score out of 10 is based on published specifications, not a hands-on test. Five criteria are worth up to 2 points each:
- Video: 1080p = 1, 1440p/2K = 1.5, 4K = 2
- Channels: front only = 1, front and rear = 1.5, three or more = 2
- Night video: basic WDR = 1, HDR, large aperture or STARVIS = 1.5, STARVIS 2 = 2
- Parking mode: not listed = 0, needs a hardwire kit = 1, built in or kit included = 2
- Extras: supercapacitor +1, Wi-Fi +0.5, GPS +0.5 (up to 2)
Frequently asked questions
Are dash cams legal in Canada?
Yes, dash cams are legal across Canada. Mount them so they do not block your view of the road, and be aware that recording audio of passengers may require their consent.
Do dash cams work at -30 °C?
Supercapacitor models are rated for much colder temperatures than battery models. Check the rated operating range, and remove battery-based cameras from the car during deep cold.
Will parking mode drain my car battery?
A hardwire kit with a low-voltage cut-off turns the camera off before your battery runs too low to start the car. In very cold weather, set the cut-off higher or limit parking recording time.
Can a dash cam lower my insurance?
Most Canadian insurers do not offer a discount for dash cams, but footage can help prove you were not at fault and speed up a claim.
