Buying guide

Virtual or real surround?

A soundbar alone creates "virtual" surround by bouncing sound off walls. Systems with rear speakers put sound behind you for real. Rear speakers that connect wirelessly still need a power outlet.

What the numbers mean

In 5.1.2, the 5 is the speakers around you, the .1 is the subwoofer and the .2 is up-firing height speakers for Dolby Atmos.

Dolby Atmos

Atmos adds height, so effects seem to come from above. It works best with up-firing drivers or ceiling speakers; streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ offer Atmos soundtracks.

Connect with HDMI eARC

HDMI eARC carries Dolby Atmos from your TV and lets the TV remote control the volume. Optical works with older TVs but can't carry Atmos.

Ignore peak watts

Peak wattage is a marketing number and doesn't predict loudness or quality, so we don't score it.

How we rank and score

Ranking follows popularity: products are listed in their Amazon.ca Best Sellers order for Surround Sound Systems (checked October 30, 2026). Only products in stock on Amazon.ca at that time are included. Items that are not TV sound systems (such as game controllers) and passive speakers that need a separate amplifier are left out.

The score out of 10 is based on published specifications, not a hands-on test. It measures features, not sound quality. Five criteria are worth up to 2 points each:

  • Surround: 2.1 = 0.5, virtual 5.1 (no rear speakers) = 1, rear speakers = 1.5, rear speakers plus height channels, or 9.1 or more = 2
  • Dolby Atmos: no = 0, yes = 2
  • Subwoofer: built-in or under 5" = 0.5, separate wired = 1, wireless = 1.5, wireless 8" or larger = 2
  • Connections: optical/Bluetooth only = 0.5, HDMI ARC = 1, HDMI eARC = 1.5, eARC plus Wi-Fi streaming (AirPlay or Google Cast) = 2
  • Setup: no app = 0.5, app control = 1, app plus automatic room calibration = 2

Frequently asked questions

Soundbar or surround system?

A soundbar is simpler and fits small rooms. A surround system with rear speakers sounds bigger for movies and games, but needs space and outlets behind your seat.

Will it work with my TV?

Almost certainly. Use HDMI eARC or ARC if your TV has it; otherwise optical or Bluetooth.

Do I need a receiver?

No. Every system here has its amplifier built in, in the soundbar or subwoofer.

Is Dolby Atmos worth it?

If you watch a lot of movies on Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video, yes, especially with up-firing or rear height speakers.
