Buying guide
What size?
Measure your viewing distance. For 4K, a screen diagonal of about two-thirds of the distance works well: around 55 inches at 2 m, 65 inches at 2.5 m. At 32 inches, HD resolution is enough.
LED, QLED, Mini LED or OLED
Standard LED TVs are the cheapest. QLED adds a quantum-dot layer for richer colour. Mini LED uses thousands of tiny backlights for brighter, more contrasty pictures. OLED, where each pixel makes its own light, has perfect blacks.
HDR formats
Dolby Vision and HDR10+ adjust brightness scene by scene. Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ use Dolby Vision; Prime Video supports both. Samsung TVs support HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision.
Gaming
For a PS5 or Xbox Series X, look for ALLM (auto low-latency mode) and VRR (variable refresh rate). A 120 Hz panel is smoother still; "motion rate" numbers are processing, not the panel's real refresh rate.
Antenna TV in Canada
Most TVs have a built-in digital tuner for free over-the-air channels in Canada; with an HD antenna you can watch local stations without cable. Check the listing to confirm.
How we rank and score
Ranking follows popularity: products are listed in their Amazon.ca Best Sellers order for Televisions (checked October 30, 2026). Only products in stock on Amazon.ca at that time are included.
The score out of 10 is based on published specifications, not a hands-on test. Five criteria are worth up to 2 points each:
- Resolution: 720p/HD = 0.5, 1080p = 1, 4K = 2
- Panel: LED = 0.5, QLED = 1, Mini LED = 1.5, OLED = 2
- HDR: none listed = 0, HDR10/HLG = 0.5, HDR10+ = 1, Dolby Vision = 2
- Gaming: none listed = 0.5, game mode or cloud gaming = 1, VRR and ALLM or a 120 Hz game mode = 1.5, native 120 Hz or more = 2
- Screen size: under 40" = 0.5, 40–50" = 1, 55–65" = 1.5, 75" or more = 2
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 4K TV?
For 50 inches and up, yes; nearly all streaming services offer 4K. At 32 inches the difference is hard to see.
Fire TV, Roku, Google TV or Tizen?
All stream the major Canadian apps, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Crave and CBC Gem. Pick the one you already know, or the one that matches your voice assistant.
Can I watch free TV with an antenna?
Usually, yes. TVs with a built-in digital tuner can show local CBC, CTV, Global and other over-the-air channels for free with an HD antenna; check the listing to confirm.
Do I need a soundbar?
Thin TVs have small speakers. A soundbar or surround system makes dialogue clearer and adds bass; see our surround sound guide.
