Buying guide
Resolution
1080p is fine for a single room. 2K (3MP) or better makes it much easier to recognise faces and read licence plates when you zoom in.
Power: plug-in, battery, solar or hardwired
Plug-in and hardwired cameras never need charging but need an outlet or wiring. Battery cameras install anywhere, but lithium cells lose capacity in deep cold. A solar panel slows battery drain; in a Canadian winter it rarely replaces charging completely.
Storage and subscriptions
Tapo, aosu, WYZE, DEKCO and similar brands record to a microSD card with no monthly fee. Ring cameras need a Ring Protect subscription to save and replay video.
Canadian winters
For outdoor use, check the operating temperature and look for an IP65 or better weather rating. Mount battery cameras under an eave to keep snow off them.
How we rank and score
Ranking follows popularity: cameras are listed in their Amazon.ca Best Sellers order for Security & Surveillance (checked October 30, 2026). Only products in stock on Amazon.ca at that time are included. Non-camera items such as doorbells, smart displays and subscriptions are left out.
The score out of 10 is based on published specifications, not a hands-on test. Five criteria are worth up to 2 points each:
- Video: 1080p = 1, 2K/3MP = 1.5, 3K or higher = 2
- Night vision: infrared (black-and-white) = 1, colour = 2
- Coverage: fixed = 1, wide-angle = 1.5, 360° pan/tilt = 2
- Recording without a subscription: none = 0, partial = 1, full local recording = 2
- Smart features: motion alerts only = 0.5, person detection or auto-tracking = 1, one of those plus a deterrent (siren, floodlight or alarm) = 1.5, both plus a deterrent = 2
Ring cameras score lower mainly because saving recordings requires a Ring Protect plan. If you already pay for Ring Protect, weigh that criterion less.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a subscription for a security camera?
Not always. Most Tapo, aosu, WYZE and DEKCO cameras record to a microSD card for free. Ring cameras show live video without a plan but need Ring Protect to save recordings.
Will a battery camera work in a Canadian winter?
Yes, but expect shorter battery life below about -10 °C. Plug-in, hardwired or solar-assisted cameras are more reliable for exposed spots.
What is the difference between 1080p and 2K?
2K (usually 3MP) has about 50% more pixels than 1080p, which gives noticeably more detail when you zoom in on a recording.
Is it legal to record my neighbour's property?
Aim cameras at your own property and avoid recording audio in public spaces. Privacy expectations differ by province, so keep neighbouring yards and windows out of frame where you can.
